What is EMDR?
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is an innovative psychotherapeutic method that accelerates the treatment of difficulties and disorders that we may face through our lives and which produce stress, discomfort, depression, traumas or phobias. This method, discovered and developed by Dr. Francine Shapiro since 1987, consists in using bilateral stimulation. The application of specific techniques produces desensitization which enables the reprocessing of feelings, sensations, thoughts and beliefs that were produced by traumatic or challenging life events and leads to the resolution of psychological symptoms disorders.
How was EMDR developed?
In 1987, psychologist Francine Shapiro observed that, under certain conditions, eye movement can reduce the intensity of disruptive thinking. Since then, EMDR has been developed thanks to the contributions of therapists and researchers from around the world.
Does EMDR really work?
Controlled studies show that EMDR is one of the most effective methods for the treatment of Post-traumatic Stress Disorders (PTSD). At present, there are more conducted on EMDR than on any other therapeutic technique. In her protocols, Shapiro, has integrated elements of different schools of psychotherapy. This has enabled the application of EMDR to the treatment of a great number of psychopathologies - making it accessible to psychotherapists of distinct approaches. Investigation shows that EMDR is a highly effective method, producing lasting positive results.
What other problems can be treated by EMDR?
EMDR has also shown to be effective in the treatment of chronic pain, grief, phobias, anxiety disorders and depression. It may be used with people of all ages. It is worth noting that it works very well for children and adolescents as it is interesting, quick and non-intrusive and it helps them resolve their difficulties and problems.
How long does en EMDR treatment last?
As is the case with other therapies, the length of the treatment depends on various factors such as the type and depth of the problem or trauma, and one’s life circumstances. Normally, an EMDR process lasts 10 sessions, carried out weekly. EMDR can be used as part of a standard individual psychotherapy, as a complement to a different therapy or as a treatment of its own.
