What is Art therapy?
Sometimes words are not enough to explain ideas, feelings and emotions. Art is a form of expression through which it is possible for a person to exteriorize interior aspects in a safe and secure form. Art therapy applies artistic mediums and processes to help the physical, mental and emotional wellbeing of people of all ages and circumstances.
In countries such as Great Britain, the United States, Canada, Israel and Sweden it is considered a complementary therapy to medicine, and is very successful. It has been proved to be an approach that allows the expression and exploration of feelings that are difficult to articulate, that in turn leads to emotional wellbeing.
How does it work?
Creativity is innate to all human beings and applying it helps to re-establish the natural capacity of individuals to relate to themselves, express what they feel and participate more fully in the world around them. Art therapy bases itself on the expression and consequent comprehension of ones' self. The emphasis is on the creative process and spontaneity, and not on the aesthetic value of the end product.
The art therapist usually conducts the session in a non-directive way, facilitating free- association, creating a safe space and working with the themes that appear within the session. An individual session usually lasts 50 minutes and a group session is approximately 90 minutes. The session is divided into two parts: the first, concentrates on the use of the materials; and the second, on the exploration of the themes that have appeared.
