What is Hypnosis?
Hypnosis is a natural state of mind. Its’ main characteristic is focused attention, usually accompanied by a state of deep relaxation. It is a distinct state of consciousness that naturally occurs to us all: each time that we get “absorbed” by a good book or film, when we “lose track of time” doing something we really enjoy or when we “daydream”, we are in a natural state of hypnosis.
What is Clinical Hypnosis?
Clinical Hypnosis is a field of psychotherapy that uses therapeutic theory and methods, combined with hypnosis. Like other types of psychotherapy, it aims to help people achieve positive and lasting changes in different areas of their lives.
How does it work?
Clinical Hypnosis makes use of tools and techniques of a wide range of disciplines. We combine these methods with hypnosis in order to help our clients achieve their objectives in the fastest and most effective ways possible. Given that our unconscious mind controls most of our behavior, hypnosis enables us to access and introduce changes, directly, from this level of consciousness.
What does treatment involve?
First of all, therapists explain the procedure that will be followed and clarify any possible doubts related to the practice of hypnosis. Part of the process is focused on collecting information, in order to achieve a deep and global understanding of each client. The interventions are carefully and specifically designed to meet the particular needs of each individual. Both the process as well as its’ length can vary, depending on each individual. Nevertheless, clinical hypnosis is a brief therapy. Significant changes can take place in just a few sessions.
What are the most common problems it treats?
Hypnosis can be applied to various psychological, emotional or physical problems. It is used to alleviate pain, to facilitate pregnancy and labor, or to reduce drug administration. It can lessen terminal patients’ suffering and it has proved to be an effective method for the treatment of addictions. Children usually respond very well to hypnosis, overcoming problems such as enuresis or chronic asthma. Phobias of all kinds can also be very effectively treated by hypnosis, as well as problems related to stress, such as insomnia.

Are there any contraindications?
There has been a lot of bad publicity around hypnosis that has, unfortunately, made a lot of people feel nervous about choosing it as a treatment. A hypnotic state that, in some cases, has also been defined as “guided meditation”, is similar to when we watch a film that captures all of our attention: we are not very aware of our surroundings, but we are always capable of changing our focus of attention at any moment. Nobody can be hypnotized against their will and it is always possible to come out of this state of consciousness. One is always in control and is very aware of his or her surroundings, as well as of the whole process. In order for the treatment to be successful one just needs motivation, a real desire to change and the willingness to work with these techniques.
